Loving Kindness

I am drawn to the meditation practice of loving-kindness. It has a background in Buddhism. Referred to as Metta or Maitri (in Sanskrit) which means benevolence, friendliness, good will and active interest in others. 

I have heard this loving kindness practice many times. It really rings deep for me. There are written forms, You Tube videos, audios etc. For me, the importance is at the  start of it all — from the heart, can we  compassionately and lovingly accept and embrace ourselves, like we would a dear loved one? If not — that is ok, no judgment here, please, just awareness — this is a great place to start to deepen your self-care. Practice this daily for at least 21 days, then see if it is any easier to say and believe… 

I am a huge proponent of self-care. Once we pay attention to what we consistently feed ourselves (mind, body & soul) we actively choose to  love our mind, body and spirit from a big picture view. That results in an abundance of love to share — instead of giving, giving and giving until we are totally drained. Isn’t that lovely? All these work together for a happy you and a happier world. We are one! 

This meditation is basically a set of phrases: which can be added to, adjusted or modified:

  • May I be happy
  • May I be healthy
  • May I be safe
  • May I be at ease

The meditation process can be broken down into steps: Try These…

  1. Sit comfortably, calm your mind and body, take a number of deep healing breaths
  2. Mindfully and compassionately say these phrases to yourself
  3. Think of someone near and dear to you, Imagine they are in from of you. Speak to them…
  4. Visualize someone you have challenges with, do the same.
  5. Spread you joy to your Community, Country and the World….
